When betting on horses, the main goal of a player is to win against the so-called “Oddsmakers” or the “OddsCompilers”, and, of course, earn some money. You may bet on a horse through Sports books; these are called “Sportsbooks” in the U.S.A. and “Bookmakers” in the U.K., these two being entities which accept bets. Through these entities you can bet on horse races and different other sports events. You can do this either in person or online. Moreover, some sports books also accept bets through the telephone. However, you should not make the mistake to believe that an oddsmaker and a sports book are one and the same thing. A sports book only accepts the bets, while an oddsmaker is a someone that establishes the betting odds.
You might be wondering what you have to do when betting on a horse. First of all you must state which horse you are betting on from those that are to take part in the race, the type of bet you are making and how much money you are wagering.
More categories of bets are used at horse races. Thus, the Straight, Win or Single bet is the most simple and common one. When making this kind of bet you put your money on a single horse and you win only when your horse is the first one that crosses the finish line. When you make a Place bet it means that you win if the horse you have selected is the first or the second one to cross the finish line. “Show” bets are those that allow you to collect even when your horse finishes on the third place.
There are also combination bets which allow you to bet on 2 to 4 horses, however, these horses must win in the order you have chosen. When you choose to play a “Pick 3” you have to select the winners of three races that take place consecutively. On the other hand, when playing a “Pick 6” you have to single out the winners of six races that are consecutive. A bet which is placed on two horses to finish first or second in mo matter which order is called “Quiniela” or “Reverse Forecast”. A “Perfecta” or “Exacta” or “Straight Forecast” is a bet which requires that the two horses you are betting on should finish the race in the exact order you have chosen.
Whenever three horses are set a bet on to finish in an exact order, the name of the bet is a “Trifecta” or “Tricast” or “Treble Forecast”. The same rule applies in the case of “Superfecta”, with the difference that here you have to bet on four. In the case of a “Daily Double” you need to pick out the winners from the first two races of a certain day. When playing a “Jackpot” all you have to do is select six winners from six races. “Parlays” or “Accumulators” are multiple bets during which you press your winnings from the first race on the bets of the next races you have selected. However, in order to win the parlay all the horses you have placed a bet on must win the race.
However, you might want to take into account some of our tips when placing a bet on a certain horse. Thus, you should bet on horses which you think that have a good chance to win. You might as well want to choose horses that have won before and avoid placing bets on horses that have just moved up in class. When the track the race takes place on is either slow or heavy you should bet on fast starters. When making a bet you should also pay attention to the starting prices of horses as this can indicate you the winner; favourites usually have higher prices.
Usually, when a horse is backed only a few minutes before the race and his odds are being reduced you should bet on it. Always select horses that have run recently because those which haven’t run for some time might have had some illnesses and might be out of shape. You should also pay attention to how good a jockey is; it is more probable for an experienced jockey to win a race. Furthermore, you should gather information about the race, the horse, the jockey and the track as well before placing a bet.
So, as you can see, betting on horses is really not that hard, all you need is a little intuition and some luck!
